At the end of the 12th century, there was a ferry to the island of Rugen, and in 1234 Stralsund received city rights and in 1293 year joined the Hanseatic League, in 1648 was included in the Swedish Pomerania, and in 1815 transferred to Prussia. The historic city center suffered from bombing during World War II, but after restored.
