The Jewish Museum, located in the Josefov district, is one of the largest museums in Europe.

The museum was founded in 1906, when August Stein ( chairman of the Jewish settlement in Prague), and Solomon Hugo Liben (famous historian) decided to create a collection of objects that have a cultural and artistic relation to the Jewish people. Items were collected from synagogues.

In the 20th century, perestroika began in the Jewish ghetto in Prague. At that time, the existence of the synagogues was in question, and the Gypsy synagogue was demolished by the decision of the city authorities. The objects collected by Lieben and Stein were kept in the Maisle Synagogue, which at that time belonged to the Jews of Prague.

After the museum moved to independent functioning, all of its exhibits were renewed. The museum also features an exhibition on the traditions, customs and history of the Jewish people.

Today, the Jewish Museum of Prague boasts the largest Jewish heritage in Europe, with a collection of over 40 thousand exhibits and 100 thousand books. The museum houses four synagogues, a Ritual Hall and two Jewish cemeteries.
