The most convenient way to get here is along the road connecting Jericho and Jerusalem. The monastery is located in a rocky area, on the territory of the Wadi Kelt gorge. It was founded at the end of the 5th century AD and named after the successor of St. John – George. George Hozevit was buried on the territory of the monastery. The monks who lived here lived in cave cells and were hermits. In 1187 the monastery was destroyed and was abandoned for many centuries. In 1878, the monk Kalinnik settled here, who arrived from Greece, who began to conduct archaeological excavations. Already in 1901, the monastery was reconstructed and restored by the efforts of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. And in 1952 a bell tower was built here, harmoniously complementing the monastery complex. Currently, the monastery is visited by many tourists who want to learn more about the history of the country.
