By the surviving buildings, one can judge the former greatness of this fortress. The first mentions of the fortress date back to the 11th century, however, archaeological excavations in this area showed that the first settlements existed here as early as the 2nd century BC. Previously, the castle was in the power of the Byzantine Empire, but at the beginning of the XIV century it passed to the Bulgarian kings. After the conquest of Bulgaria by the Ottoman Empire, the fortress, as before, continued to retain an important strategic importance. At that time, the thickness of the fortress walls was 2-2.5 meters, and the castle consisted of two parts. Today, the remains of the walls can be seen on the southwestern and southern sides of the plateau. Vertical rocks, reaching a height of about 30 meters, served as a natural defense of the fortress on the north and east sides. Archaeological excavations carried out on the territory of the fortress almost daily allow us to replenish the stock of knowledge about this amazing place. In our time, only fragments of the fortress structures have survived. Archaeologists and even tourists often find fragments of medieval and ancient ceramics here. From the upper part of the plateau, where the ruins of the main gate and the ancient castle are located, a magnificent panorama opens. On the northern side of the plateau there is a cave with a holy spring, where believers come to take holy water.
