Today there are several legends about the origin of the name of the city of Burgas. According to one version, the city was named after a fortress located on the territory of Burgas. Until our century, unfortunately, only the ruins of this once majestic fortress have survived, which can be observed on the shores of Lake Mandrensky.

According to many modern historians and scientists, the Pyrgos fortress was built during the Middle Ages. The fact that Pyrgos played one of the important roles in the development of the city is beyond doubt, the only thing is that the dates of its construction and destruction are still unknown. However, scientists believe that the fortress was destroyed during the rule of the Turks.

Nowadays, few parts of it have survived, but archaeological excavations are still being conducted on its territory.
