The temple got its name due to the fact that it contains a bell, cast in 1406. The bell is about 7 meters high and weighs almost 47 tons. This bell is one of the largest bells in the world and is believed to be audible at a distance of twenty kilometers. In 1985, the Museum of Ancient Bells was opened in the temple. It displays hundreds of bells that were cast in China and neighboring countries.
