The name of this area is translated from Spanish as 'length'. It stretches around the old part of Barcelona and is shaped like an arc. A distinctive feature of this area is – a rectangular network of streets.

This area was built in the 19th century during the expansion of the city. Two plans were presented: Antoni Rovir Trias took the streets radially diverging from the Old Town as a basis, and the street plan of Idelfonso Cerda was chessboard. Initially, the first project was approved, but on May 31, 1860, according to a royal decree, the Cerda plan was established.

Today this area is considered one of the most popular tourist attractions.
