Photo and description

Walking along the picturesque Rambla of the Capuchins, you can turn into a small street leading to one of the most beautiful and famous places in Barcelona - Placa Real.

In the middle of the 19th century, the Barcelona authorities, having decided to create a square on the territory of a former monastery, announced a competition for the best project, in which the architect Francesc Daniel Molina won. According to his project, in 1850-1859, the square was laid out, which received the name Royal. Later, in 1878, it was decided to decorate and plant trees on the square. The young architect Antoni Gaudi took part in the design of the square. Thanks to the extraordinary and bright talent of the outstanding architect, the Royal Square acquired its magnificent, unique and cozy look. Gaudi created lanterns of amazing shape and beauty, which in themselves are a real work of art. In the evenings, the square is beautifully illuminated by their whimsical light. In the center of the square there is a beautiful fountain with the beautiful name "Three Graces", near which many tourists and passers-by always rest. The Royal Square has a large number of restaurants and cafes, as well as nightclubs that attract a large number of visitors. During many holidays, festivals and open-air concerts are held on the square, gathering a huge number of people.

In 1984, the Royal Square was reconstructed according to the author's project of architects Correa and Mila. According to this project, the carriageway of the square was completely replaced by a pedestrian area.
