Via Sacra is the main road of the Roman Forum, connecting the Capitoline and Palatine hills.

In the 5th century BC. in order to protect the road from rain and moisture, a foundation was laid. Later, the road was fortified, and during the reign of Emperor Nero it was decorated with colonnades.

In the 6th century BC. the road reached a width of three meters, was lined with tuff, and a wide sewage canal running along it led to the Great Cesspool.

Honorary guests of the city entered the Roman Forum along this road, religious festivities and triumphal processions.
