In the 5th century BC. in order to protect the road from rain and moisture, a foundation was laid. Later, the road was fortified, and during the reign of Emperor Nero it was decorated with colonnades. In the 6th century BC. the road reached a width of three meters, was lined with tuff, and a wide sewage canal running along it led to the Great Cesspool.
