The Appian Way is the most important of the ancient Roman public roads. The road was built in 312 BC and originally ran from Rome to the city of Capua. Over time, the road was drawn to the city of Brundisia. Later, through the Appian Way, the communication of Rome with Egypt, Asia Minor and Greece was established.

Today, along the roads you can see many monuments – villas and tombs of the imperial and republican periods, Jewish and Christian catacombs, medieval fortifications and towers built on the ruins of Roman monuments, Baroque and Renaissance buildings.

The Appian Way had an important cultural, military and commercial value. The road was marked by Theodor Mommsen as a military highway. In the war against the king of Pyrrhus, as well as during the Macedonian wars, the road served to support the Romans.

Since antiquity, the road has played an important role, connecting Rome with rich Italian regions such as Apulia and Campaign.

Soon the Romans began to erect magnificent monuments and monumental tombs along the road, the decoration of which was a matter of prestige at that time. 20 years after the opening of traffic on the road, representatives of the Roman family of Scipios built crypts in which their family members were buried.

In the Byzantine period, the importance of the road remained as a link between Rome and Constantinople and New Rome. At the beginning of the 6th century, Theodoric the Great ordered the road to be repaired, after which in 536 he led his army along it to capture Rome.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, various sports competitions were held on the Apia Way. During the 1960 Olympic Games, the road was used for marathon track and field competitions.
