The Palace of the Romanian Queen Mary, also called the `` Quiet Nest '', is one of the most beautiful buildings in Bulgaria. The palace is located between three hills on the Black Sea coast. This part of Bulgaria at one time territorially belonged to Romania, which explains the choice for the location of the palace.

The construction of the palace began in 1936, and was completed only in 1947. The building was built according to a working drawing made by architects Augustino and Ameriko, who arrived from Italy.

Queen Maria of Romania spent all her childhood years in Egypt and has always been a supporter of the convergence of the Muslim and Christian faiths, therefore the palace combines Eastern, Christian and Roman styles in decoration.

Near the palace there is a small chapel, which contains life-size carvings of Mary and her daughter Ilyana. There is also a Cypriot iconostasis.

One dramatic and at the same time touching story is associated with the palace. During a duel between her sons in 1938, the queen was mortally wounded by a shot while trying to prevent them. Dying, Maria asked to bury her heart in the palace in Balchik. The last will of the queen was fulfilled, and until 1940, Mary's heart was within the walls of the chapel.

Today, cultural events and exhibitions are often held in the palace.
