During the initial decoration of the building, gold leaf was used, hence the second name of the palace. Ultramarine and vermilion were also used for finishing. Nowadays, the palace is a real example of Venetian Gothic. The construction of the building dates back to the 15th century. The palace was built by order of Martino Contarini. The project was designed by the architect Giovanni Bona and his son Bartolomeo Bona. Originally, on the site of the present palace, there was a Byzantine-style palace, which Contarini received as a dowry for his wife. Soon the old palace was demolished, although fragments of it have survived in the facade of the Ka ’ d ’ Oro. Throughout its existence, the palace changed many owners and was rebuilt several times. In 1894 Baron Giorgio Franchetti took over the palace. During this period, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out in the palace, during which the building acquired an almost original appearance, according to old drawings and paintings. In addition, the Baron founded a rich collection of paintings. After the death of Harrow, the palace was nationalized. Since 1927, the Franchetti Gallery has been located in the palace. Ca Palace ’ d ’ Oro, along with other attractions in Venice, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
