With the arrival of the Turks in Cyprus, Islam began to be promoted. The Turks by any means tried to convert the local population of the island to their religion. As a result of numerous raids on Nicosia, the Catholic Church of St. George was destroyed. Subsequently, the Turkish baths Buyuk Hamam were built on its ruins.

Cyprus is a rather restless island. Although there are no major earthquakes, light tremors are almost constant. Due to the fact that the baths are quite ancient, they suffered a lot of shocks, part of the ground under the baths was deformed, and the entrance gate went a whole meter underground.

In Turkish baths, local bath attendants for a small baksheesh (gift), will demonstrate their skills to the fullest.
