The temple began to be built during the reign of Emperor Dade, in 1302. The construction ended 4 years later. After that, it was rebuilt and expanded more than once. In 1737, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, the roof of the main hall was covered with yellow tiles. And since 1981, the pavilions of the Museum of the History of the Capital have been located in the temple.

The area of the temple is about 22 thousand square meters. The main buildings of the complex – Chongsheng Memorial Temple, Hall of Great Success and the Gate of Great Success. It is worth paying attention to the ancient trees around the temple, as well as stone tablets in the three courtyards.

The temple is inextricably linked with the Imperial Academy, it can be accessed from the temple through the Chijing Gate. The Academy itself is located west of the temple complex. During the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty, future officials were trained in this academy. The academy was built in 1308. Its area – 28 thousand square meters. Apart from the Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Vietnamese and even Russians studied here for a long time.

After the Republic of China was founded, the academy was turned into the Capital Library. Today, the premises where the classrooms used to be located are exhibition halls.
