Esplanade Nam Giao is an undeveloped empty space in a fortress between city buildings and the citadel, a promenade, flat open area.

In 1802, King Gia Long ordered to build an esplanade in the village of An Ninh , for various religious ceremonies. Over time, the esplanade was abandoned by the royal court, as new terraces were built south of the citadel in the village of Duong Xuan.

The total height of the three levels of the esplanade is 4.65 meters. The forms and architecture of the esplanade were based on the principles of Yin and Yang, as well as the five basic elements – wood, metal, fire, earth and water. The architecture of this esplanade was important to Eastern feudalism, both religiously and politically.
