Elea is an ancient city located on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Lucania, 25 kilometers from Petum. The city was recently included in the UNESCO list as a World Heritage Site.

The city was founded by the Phoceans, who arrived from Asia Minor, in 535 BC. Initially, the city bore the name of Hilea, and was later renamed to Elea. In 275 the city became an ally of Rome, in 90 BC. he finally submitted to the Romans. Later, due to the frequent raids of the Saracens, the city was completely abandoned.

Partly the city became famous thanks to its philosophers – Zeno and Parmenides.
