His bronze monument adorns the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica. Nikola was proclaimed the ruler of the country in 1860 and ruled for over 50 years. It was he who declared Montenegro a kingdom in 1910 and did his best to bring the country to the European level. The king was well educated, knew many languages and possessed extraordinary diplomatic skills. The king died in 1921, his ashes, being originally buried in Paris, were later transferred to his homeland, to Montenegro.
