Painted churches in the Troodos area of Cyprus, Troodos resort

Painted churches located in the Troodos area are represented by both small churches with a rustic architectural style and large monasteries. These churches are lavishly decorated with wall paintings and give an idea of the Byzantine   and post-Byzantine painting on the island. All churches are under the protection of UNESCO. These churches include:
  •           Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Kakopetria. This church is a cross-domed church. It has been restored more than once, as a result of which it has lost its original, original form. The church has preserved frescoes dating from the 11th-17th centuries. Fragments of the 11th century murals have survived. These paintings include the image of the Mother of God surrounded by the archangels Gabriel and Michael, the Transfiguration and the Resurrection of Lazarus, and others.
  •           Church of Panagia in the village of Lagudera was built in the XII century. The wall frescoes of the church are considered the most expressive example of painting in the 12th century. The iconographic cycle of murals includes scenes from the life of the Virgin.
  •           The Panagia Church in the village of Nikitari was built in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos Forviotissa. Here are preserved murals of the XII-XVII centuries. In the 14th century, many early frescoes were destroyed during restoration work. In the church you can see the image of Saints Constantine and Helena (1105), John Chrysostom, Gregory the Theologian and others.
  •           Church of Panagia in the village of Galata was built in 1502. The church is not entirely decorated with frescoes. The murals date back mainly to the 15th century. Images of the Mother of God, Christ, archangels and saints are presented as human and sublime at the same time, they are idealized, but at the same time filled with life.
  •           The Panagia Church in the village of Mutullas was built in 1279. After the construction of the temple, its walls were painted with frescoes. The features of the image are a disproportionate image of the human body, a narrow range of colors (mainly red), and the absence of halftones.
  •           The Church of the Archangel Michael in the village of Pedula was built in 1474 and is fully decorated with paintings. The author of the frescoes is Minos.   His work emphasizes his love for shades of red.
  •           Church of the Holy Cross in Platanistasas region. Not only the walls are covered with frescoes, but also the wooden beams that support the church. On some of the frescoes, the saints have their eyes scratched. They were abused by a Turkish soldier during the reign of the Ottoman Empire.
  •           The Church of the Holy Cross in the village of Pelentri was built in the XIV century. This church is decorated with 16 frescoes of the Old Testament prophets, 14 frescoes telling about the life of the Virgin Mary and others.
  •           Monastery of St. John in Kalopanayoti. This monastery combines elements from different styles and eras, artistic and architectural.
