The Sofia Folk Opera is the largest musical theater in the NRB. The Opera was opened in 1908, and in 1910 the first national opera The Beggar, written by E. Manolov, was staged here.
Initially, the theater worked under the name of the Bulgarian Opera Association. (`` Balgarska operatic friendship ''). In 1921, the theater became state-owned, at the same time it received its current name. In the 30s a first-class opera group was formed here. In addition to Bulgarian works, works of Western European and Russian classics began to be staged. In 1937, the ballet The Serpent and Yana, written by H. Manolov, was staged at the Opera.
The folk opera also played an important role in the development of the national vocal school. In 1939-1945, after the Second World War, the theater received significant assistance from Soviet masters, who staged many works by Soviet and Russian composers. In the 60s, the theater gained the status of one of the leading theaters in the world.
