Nine dynastic urns, located next to the Thieu Temple, represent one of the main attractions of the Citadel.

The urns were cast in 1836 by order of King Minh Manga. Each urn was engraved with the name of an emperor from the Nguyen dynasty. Today these urns, as at that time, represent a symbol of the sovereignty of the dynasty. Each of the urns also contains an image of 17 traditional patterns of Vietnam – rivers, mountains, stars, forests, seas, etc.
