Rating: 8,8/10 (1445 votes) The Church of St. Athanasius, located near the Roman Baths, was built in August 1838, on the site of a small church that burned down in 1836. Until 1914, the church service in the temple was conducted by the Greeks. In 1920, Russian priests served at the church. Since 1939, the church passed to the Bulgarian clergy at the insistence of Metropolitan Joseph. In 1961, the Church of St. Athanasius was turned into a museum of ancient icons by order of the local authorities. Divine services have been resumed in the temple since 1991.
