The Kamerlengo fortress was built in the 15th century as the palace of the Venetian ruler. It has high walls that connect three towers. One side overlooks the sea, while the other three protect the fortification from the mainland.

St. Mark's Tower was erected a little later than the fortress, and is connected to it. It has a round shape. Artillery was installed on its top. Its main function was to protect the channel between the mainland and the island.

In summer, theatrical performances and open-air concerts are held in the inner courtyard of the fortress.
