Spinalonga island in Greece, Crete resort
Rating: 7,9/10 (4523 votes)  This small island-rock is located in the Mirabello Bay, directly opposite the resort of Elounda. Archaeologists have found here items that confirm that the island was the temple of Aris and Aphrodite – immortal lovers. On this island in 1579, the Venetians built a fortress to protect Mirabello. The area of the rock on which the fortress was built was 200x400 meters. The fortress also served to protect the city of Olonte, now called Elounda. During the raids of the Saracens, Christians hid behind the walls of the fortress. During the war between the Venetians and the Turks, the fortress held out for 24 years. For some time there was a colony for lepers on the island. They were brought here to die from all over Crete. The colony was closed only in 1957.
