New fortress (Neo Fryrio) description and photos - Greece: Corfu (Kerkyra). Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Neo Fryrio. Photo and descriptionThe new fortress of Corfu, also known as Neo Frurio, is located on the hill of St. Mark near the old city harbor and protects the city from the west. This building is somewhat smaller than the Old Fortress, but is considered more interesting from an architectural point of view. The construction of the fortress began in 1576 by the Venetians, when it became clear that the Old Fortress was not enough for a full-fledged defense of the city. The design and construction of fortifications was carried out by the Venetian architect Francesco Vitelli. More than 2,000 buildings were destroyed to build a fortress (to collect building material). The main construction was completed only in 1645. Later, the French and the British also made their additions. The new fortress is a two-level structure. The main function of the lower layer was to protect the port. The upper level was intended for the defense of the city. The fortress consists of two massive twin bastions that dominate the port. The two main gates of the fortress have been well preserved to this day. They are decorated with the symbol of Venice - the winged lion of St. Mark. There are also underground tunnels that connect the new fortress with the old one, as well as with the city, but they are closed to the public. On one side, the fortress is surrounded by a waterless moat. The fortress was badly damaged during the bombing during the Second World War, but was later rebuilt. The two city fortresses were previously connected by walls, which were destroyed during the unification of the island of Corfu and Greece. Officially, this majestic ancient structure bears the name "Fortress of St. Mark", but more often it is called simply "New Fortress". Today it is open to the public every day, and you can take a short excursion through the labyrinths of medieval corridors and defensive structures. From the top of the fortress, beautiful panoramic views open up. After restoration, exhibitions of painting, photography, sculpture, music concerts and other cultural events are held here. There is also a small cafe on site.
