The monastery complex of Saints Peter and Paul today is an archaeological reserve, where excavations are still underway.

The monastery was built during the reign of Tsar Kaloyan in the 13th century. The main church of the complex was erected by order of the wife of the Tsar, Anna-Maria – daughter of the Hungarian ruler. The church was originally a patriarchal church. It was here that the decision was made to unite with the Roman Catholic Church. After the victory of Orthodoxy in Bulgaria, the church authority moved to the Church of the Ascension of the Lord.

In 1393, the city was taken by the Ottomans, in connection with which the church again became a patriarchal center. Before exile, Patriarch Evtimiy served in it in recent years.

After the Bulgarian Patriarchate was abolished, the church became the center of the metropolitans of Bulgaria until the 19th century.

During archaeological excavations, jewelry made by craftsmen from the city of Veliko Tarnovo was discovered. The remains of an early floor covering of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul from the 13th century were also found.
