Rating: 8,3/10 (7634 votes) The Kapinovsky monastery is located 18 kilometers from the city of Veliko Tarnovo. According to historians, the monastery was built in the 13th century during the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, the monastery was an important religious center. After the capture of Bulgaria by the Turks, the monastery was destroyed, but at the end of the 17th century, with the permission of the Turkish authorities, it was restored again. In 1835 a church was built here, and in 1864 – buildings for monks and hegumen. During the Renaissance, a literary school was created in the monastery complex. The monastery also played an important role in the April Uprising. Today, the main church of the complex houses a collection of icons, among which there is also an icon of the Holy Mother of God.
