Photo and descriptionSt. Peter and Paul is one of the most famous Orthodox churches in the city of Veliko Tarnovo. Dedicated to one of the most popular Christian saints - the apostles Paul and Peter. This small, squat building is located at the foot of the Tsarevets hill. The temple was built in the 30s of the XIII century at the initiative of Queen Anne Maria of Hungary to house the relics of St. John of Polivotsky. It was in this church that the famous Tsar Kaloyan was proclaimed the head of state. Initially, there was also a monastery complex near the building of the church, but, unfortunately, it has not survived to this day. The interior of the temple is quite simple, which, however, only adds to its charm and charm. On the columns dividing the interior into parts, and on the walls of the church you can see many beautiful old patterns and frescoes created by Bulgarian craftsmen over the entire long history of the church. A fresco created in the 13th century, which depicts the martyrs of Edesa - Gury, Samon and Aviv, deserves special mention. Also, the attention of visitors to the temple is attracted by the massive majestic iconostasis located here. After the earthquake of 1913, the building of the temple was badly damaged and was completely restored only in 1981 on the basis of original photographs and drawings designed by the architect Boyan Kuzupov. Church of Sts. Paul and Peter was declared a national historical monument in Bulgaria, an architectural monument of national importance and an artistic monument of national importance.
