This market is the most popular and richest marketplace in Barcelona. The first mention of it is found in written sources in 1237, but even they do not speak of a new market, therefore Mercat de Sant Josep – it is a very ancient marketplace.

The market appeared right at the gate like a grocery storehouse. Now the place where it is located is called Boqueria Square. About 800 years ago, peasants and artisans brought their goods here for sale.

Until 1794, this trading area was called Mercado de   la   Paja. By this year, the market had expanded and began to get in the way, so it was moved repeatedly. The modern market building was built in 1840 on Saint Joseph's Day. It was then that the market received not only a haven, but also the patronage of the saint. The roof was built in 1914.

Today the Boqueria market – it is a real city landmark because of the location and the old medieval atmosphere, as well as the traditions supported by local merchants. Almost everything here – they are the descendants of the very first merchants who had the right to stand in this market.

Here they sell products produced on nearby farms and brought from afar: milk, poultry, meat, fish, pickles, smoked meats and much other. A specially designated area sells cheese, fresh bread and wine. There are tasting tables for tourists. This market also houses some of the best restaurants in the city.
