The market building, built of steel and glass, occupies a large area of 2583 sq.m. The history of this market dates back to the Middle Ages, from the beginning of the 13th century. Initially, it was a place where meat was sold, then pigs. In those days, the market was located outside the city gates, and visiting merchants could display their goods here. Until 1794, the market was called the Mercat Bornet or Mercat de la Palla (“straw market”). At first, the market was an open square surrounded by columns, on which trade was conducted and which was subsequently planned to be built. But for a long time the market did not have an official status, therefore, no work was carried out on its device. And only in 1826 this place was officially recognized as a market. In 1840, the building of the market pavilion began to be erected here according to the project and under the direction of the architect Mas Vila. The official opening year of Boqueria is 1853. In 1911, a new fish market was opened on the territory of Boqueria, in 1914 a new metal roof was created, which has survived to this day. Today, a huge number of people visit Boqueria every day. There are long, neat rows of stalls where you can find anything you want: a huge assortment of meat products, cheeses, sausages, mushrooms, fish, seafood, beautifully laid out vegetables, fruits, sweets and desserts. But nevertheless, Boqueria is not just a market, this is a truly historic part of the city.
