Legend has it that in the 5th century the local bishop Petronius erected a Christian complex on the site of a temple dedicated to the goddess Isis, which, in his opinion , repeated the Jerusalem Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Today the basilica is considered one of the best-preserved reproductions of the temple in Europe in Jerusalem. The exact date of the construction of the basilica is still not known, but experts say that the complex was built during the early Middle Ages. The basilica's portico was built in the 13th century and became known as Pilate's Court. Currently, the portico is a link between the Church of the Holy Trinity and the buildings of the complex. Unfortunately, due to the restoration work carried out here at the turn of the XIX – XX centuries, the complex has lost its original appearance. Church of the Holy Sepulcher – the central church of the complex, built in the 5th century. The church is octagonal in shape with 12 columns that support the dome. Five columns of the temple were made of bricks, the other seven – from marble. In the central part of the temple is the aedikole of St. Petronius. The Church of the Crucifixion of the Lord, built in the 13th century, also deserves special attention. The main staircase leads to the presbytery, where the Crucifix, created by Simone dei Crochifissi in the 14th century, is located.
