During the period of China's occupation of Vietnam (I – X centuries), Vietnamese culture under the influence of Chinese culture underwent a significant number of changes. In particular, Confucianism influenced the Vietnamese worldview. The temple was built in honor of Confucius and his teachings. In the 15th century, during the Li Dynasty, awards ceremonies were also held here. On 82 stone steles, the names, achievements and places of birth of people who received doctoral degrees in exams, which were held in 1442-1778, once every three years, are kept. Each stele was installed on a turtle, considered a symbol of wisdom in Vietnam. Later, next to the Temple of Literature, the first University was erected for the children of high-ranking courtiers and mandarins (officials). Today, the Temple of Literature attracts not only tourists. Vietnamese poets and artists come here looking for inspiration, students with textbooks and books usually sit between the steles, hoping to find good luck in exams, as well as the wisdom of previous generations.
