Amathus is the ancient city of Cyprus. Only a lot of ruins, building foundations, columns and more have survived to this day. It is located on the seashore, about 5 kilometers east of Limassol.

According to archaeological excavations, the city emerged about a thousand years BC. The city is named after the mother of King Kiniras of Paphos - Amathus. In the 11th century, the city consisted of three parts: the Necropolis, the Acropolis and the lower city. Amathus flourished for about sixteen centuries. Copper and timber were transported through the harbor of the city (now under water). In the 7th century BC, the Arabs destroyed the city, and in the 12th century, Richard the Lionheart completely destroyed it.

During the excavations, an early Christian basilica was discovered, decorated with precious stones; a market with many marble columns; the temple of Aphrodite; part of the city and port walls; water pipes. Many buildings were dismantled, and the stone from the walls was sent to the construction of the Suez Canal.

In general, walking through the ruins of the city, we can conclude that Amathus was a fairly developed city for the ancient world (for example, water supply).
