This monastery is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in China.

It was built in 268 and was named Zongshan. During the Sui dynasty, it was rebuilt and given its modern name. This monastery gradually became the center of a network of 45 Buddhist monasteries founded by Emperor Jian.

This monastery was the center of Tantric Indian Buddhism. Indian monks worked and lived here. However, the monastery soon lost its influence.

In 841-845, during the persecution of Buddhists, the monastery was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuilt only in 1785, during the Ming Dynasty.

The monastery was reconstructed between 1955 and 1983. Most of the buildings were repaired, some were even rebuilt. The monastery houses an ancient statue of Maitreya Buddha, which may be from the Song era.
