Located next to the Lion's Gate, at the very beginning of the famous Via Dolorosa, you can see this wonderful historical monument of Romanesque architecture. This Catholic church is dedicated to the mother of the Holy Virgin Mary. A long time ago, around the 3rd century BC, the temple of Asclepius was located here. It was later destroyed and a basilica called Mary of Healing was built in its place in 458 AD. After suffering a series of destruction and rebuilding, the church of St. Anne that we see today dates back to 1142. At that time it was rebuilt by the Crusaders. Later, in 1192, it was converted into an educational institution - a madrasah, and in this capacity it functioned safely for many centuries. In the 19th century, the Church of St. Anne was restored under the leadership of the architect M. Maus, thanks to whom the temple restored the old Romanesque features.
