The Chapel of the Ascension is located at the very top of the Mount of Olives in the place from where Jesus Christ performed the ascension. In 380 AD, a chapel was built here, which was part of the Ascension Temple.
Later, in the 8th century, the Ascension Chapel was rebuilt in the form that we can see today. The small octagonal building, covered with a hemispherical dome, is surrounded by high walls.
The interior of the building with a predominantly woody motif was painted on the capitals in 1140. In the 19th century, the chapel was restored after a strong earthquake by the Orthodox Greek, Catholic and Armenian communities of the Holy Places.
