Russian Church of the Apostle Peter and Righteous Tabitha in Jaffa, Israel, Tel Aviv resort
Rating: 7,8/10 (1659 votes)  The Russian Orthodox Church of the Apostle Peter is located not far from the house of Simon the tanner. In this house, according to the legend, the Apostle Peter himself was visiting. The construction of the church was carried out on a site that was acquired in 1868 with the participation of Antonin – priest and archimandrite. On the purchased land, even before the construction of the church, a hospice was built specially for Orthodox pilgrims arriving through the port of Jaffa to Palestine, and decorative and fruit trees were planted, and a well was dug. The construction of the Church of the Apostle Peter was started in 1884 year, which was attended by local residents and Italian masters. The icons for the temple were made by the critic and artist A.Z. Ledakov. In 1894, Patriarch Gerasim of Jerusalem consecrated the church. Over time, the church, like the rest of the courtyard buildings, they were badly dilapidated. In 1995, active restoration work began here. In 1996, the external restoration of the temple was completely completed. Archimandrite Antonin, who for a long time was the rector of embassy churches in Constantinople and Athens, where he studied Greco-Byzantine architecture, took part in the design of the building. That is why it is possible in the structure of the building and the influence of Byzantine architecture is observed. The temple has two aisles – the left side-altar of righteous Tabitha and the central side-altar, built in honor of the chains of the Apostle Peter. The bell tower of the temple is the highest point of Jaffa. Wall paintings, according to sources, were made by masters from the Pochaev Lavra. The walls and the upper tier of the temple are illustrated with scenes from the life of the Apostle Peter. Altar pillars separating the deacon and the altar from the altar, are decorated with images of Paul and Peter. On the other pillars in the upper part, the other ten apostles are depicted. During the excavations carried out in the garden, it was possible to find the tomb of the righteous Tabitha, where you can observe the perfectly preserved mosaic of the Byzantine era of the 5-6 centuries. Later, a small chapel was built over the tomb.
