The Capuchin Monastery, located near the Cabbage Market in Brno, is today one of the most interesting and popular city attractions.

Capuchins appeared in Brno in the early 17th century century, and the construction of the monastery took place in 1653. During the Thirty Years War, the monastery was destroyed, later it was decided to build a church in its place.

In the 18th century, a number of reconstruction works were carried out in the monastery under the direction of the architects Grimmovs. In 1765, the terrace in front of the main facade was decorated with Baroque sculptures of Franciscan saints and St. Joseph, by J.A. Nessmann. In 1927, the sculpture of St. Vavrzynets by C. Vosmik was added here.

The Capuchins used a rather unusual method of burial. Their coffins were made with a retractable bottom. At the end of the funeral rite, the coffin with the deceased was brought into the tomb, and then the bottom of the coffin was removed. The monk fell to the floor, and the coffin was ready for the next burial. Then two bricks were placed under the head of the monk – poverty symbol. After the opening of the tomb, the relics of 16 monks buried without coffins were discovered.

Until the end of the 18th century, most representatives of noble Czech and Austrian families were buried in this crypt for a lot of money, since it was believed that during with the help of monastic graves, the chances of getting to heaven increased.
