The monastery of Elijah the Prophet, founded by two monks from Pyrgos in 1711, was built at the highest point of Santorini. From here you can see stunning views of the neighboring surrounding islands, and in clear weather you can also see the mountain peaks of Crete, the largest island in the Mediterranean, located 100 kilometers from Santorini.
Ancient Fira is located just below the monastery. Unfortunately, the NATO radar installation and radio masts spoil the whole view of the beautiful bell tower of the monastery.
The locals are sensitive to the monastery, because it houses a secret school, which taught the Greek language and culture during the Turkish rule.
Today, there is a museum at the monastery, which houses a model of a monastic cell and a secret school,
