Crespi d'Adda factory village in Italy
Rating: 7,6/10 (400 votes)  Crespi d'Adda is a historic settlement located in Capriate San Gervasio, in northern Italy. Crespi-d ’ Adda is a prime example of a 19th – XX centuries, which were built in North America and Europe by enlightened entrepreneurs to resettle workers. In 1995 the village was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In 1875, entrepreneur Cristoforo Benigno Crespi purchased a small plot of land for the construction of a cotton spinning mill. In 1878, a settlement with a small social infrastructure began to form around industrial buildings. A hospital, church, school, baths, theater and cemetery were built here. In 1897, the construction of the neo-Gothic family castle was completed. In 1906, a hydroelectric power plant was built along the Adda River for industrial needs. In 1889, Silvio Crespi returned to the village – son of Cristoforo, who became the new director. Silvio abandoned the construction of multi-apartment residential buildings, preferring private houses with separate gardens. Such houses began to appear here only since 1892. During the Great Depression in 1929, due to harsh taxation by the fascist authorities the Crespi family was forced to sell the village. It was soon acquired by an Italian textile company. Subsequently, the village was owned by the Legler company, and then – industrial group Polly. In 2004, production at the factory was practically stopped.
