Torre Annunziata is a southern suburb of Naples. The city is located at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, on the coast of the Gulf of Naples. Torre Annunziata is considered one of the centers of the Neapolitan Mafia (Camorra). Geographically, the city occupies 7 km 2.

In the 16th century, during the construction of a waterfall under the leadership of Domenico Fontano to supply water to Torre Annunziata from the river Sarno, the ruins of ancient structures and an inscription were discovered, indicating that these ruins were nothing more than the villa of Wrath Pompey Magna – the great figure of the 1st century BC.

For many centuries archaeological work was carried out here, during which various objects of ancient art were discovered. In the middle of the 18th century, it was established that the ruins are not just a villa, but a whole city.

In the 70s of the XX century, archaeologists uncovered the perfectly preserved country residence of Poppea Sabina, as well as the villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius. Most of the works of ancient art are kept in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Today Pompeii and the nearby ancient cities have become a place of pilgrimage for tourists who come here every year from all over the world.
