The current facade of the building was created by Girolamo Rainaldi, designed by the architect Giacomo Della Porto. The fountain and staircase of the palace were created by Michelangelo. The fountain was decorated with statues symbolizing the Nile and Tiber, in the central part there was a statue of Jubilant Rome. In 1579, the Capitoline Tower was built, the author of the project was Martino Longhi. During the time of Emperor Constantine, a cross was erected on the top of the Capitol Hill after the construction of the tower. About 500 years later, the mayor of the city, in a fit of anti-clerical hysteria, removed the cross from the top. In November 1924 a cross which is of great value to the Romans, returned to its former place. Currently, the palace is the residence of the mayor.
