This square is located in the heart of Beijing. Its territory is 440 thousand square meters, it is the largest area in the world.

From the Gate of Heavenly Peace in the old days, the emperor announced his decrees. And in 1949, it was from them that Mao Zedong proclaimed   the formation of the PRC. During the time of the emperors, ordinary citizens were not allowed into the square, and during the time of the PRC, mass parades and demonstrations began to be held here.

The square acquired its enormous size only by the 10th anniversary of the PRC. Grandiose buildings were built on it: the Great People's Palace, where parliamentary sessions are held, as well as the Museum of History and Revolution, the exposition of which reflects the official version of history. And since 1977, the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong has been located in the center of the square.

The Monument to the People's Heroes is also located on the square. It is a huge three-story obelisk. The monument was built in honor of the soldiers who died during the revolutions of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Construction of the monument lasted from 1952 to 1958. In 1953, a huge stone slab weighing about a hundred tons was brought here for the foundation of the monument. After processing the slab began to weigh 60 tons.

The height of the obelisk is almost 38 meters, and the area is – about 3 thousand square meters. It is composed of 413 granite blocks of various sizes, which are stacked in 32 rows.

The monument is located north of the Mao Zedong mausoleum, in the south of the square. On the pedestal there are eight white marble bas-reliefs that reflect the events of the revolutions from the First Opium War to the very founding of the PRC. Starting from the east, the bas-reliefs are arranged in chronological order clockwise:
  • 1840 Burning opium during the First Opium War;
  • 1851 Taiping Uprising in Jintian Village;
  • ; 1911 Xinhai Revolution and Wuchang Uprising;
  • 1919 May 4th Movement;
  • 1925 May 30th movement;
  • 1927 - Nanchang Uprising;
  • 1931-1945 years Anti-Japanese War;
  • 1949 Crossing the Yangtze.
