Zigu Monastery, founded in 991, is located on the third `` finger '' the Chilkidiki peninsula, next to the border of St. Athos.

In the 11th century, Zigou was one of the most significant Athos monasteries. In 1206, a Frankish knight settled in the monastery with an army, who raided the Holy Land from here. The raids stopped only thanks to the intervention of the Pope, who expelled the knight from the monastery.

Today, only ruins remain of the monastery, in which you can observe the original structure of the masonry, since after the destruction the monastery was not rebuilt. To this day, archaeological excavations continue here, the territory of which can be entered only by agreement with the administration.
