Today, here you can see the surviving part of the Ottoman fortification system, which was used in 1853-56 during the Crimean War, and in 1877-78 – during the Russian-Turkish war. The construction of the fortress was carried out in 1841-53. The architect of the building was Helmut von Moltke – German military engineer. About 300 Bulgarians were forcibly involved in the construction of the fortress. The main craftsmen were hired from the Dryanovo region, while the masons were taken from the area.
