The Church of St. John the Baptist was originally built in the 4th century as a temple to Jupiter on the territory of Diocletian's palace. But the construction of the temple was not completed due to the death of the emperor.

В   In the 6th century, the Temple of Jupiter was slightly rebuilt, a bell tower was added and tombs were equipped. In the same century, the temple was consecrated by the Christian church, and since then it has been known as the baptistery of St. John the Baptist. In the baptistery there is a statue of St. John, created by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.

An interesting element of the baptistery is a baptismal font with a plate depicting King Zvonomir. The tombs of the church contain the remains of two bishops: Bishop John, who lived in the 8th century,
