According to the finds, the settlement inhabiting here was also related to the Minoan civilization, as evidenced by the use of the Cretan hieroglyphic letter A and the strong similarity in the writing of the frescoes. The excavation got its name in honor of a modern village located nearby on a hill. The original name of this ancient settlement is still unknown. This city was buried under a layer of ash in connection with a volcanic eruption that occurred around 1500 BC. Despite this, the city managed to survive perfectly. In 1967, the first excavations began here, led by Spiridon Marinatos – famous Greek archaeologist. During the excavations, earthenware, frescoes, furniture, sophisticated sewerage and drainage systems, as well as 3-storey residential buildings were discovered. In 2005, shortly before the end of excavations, a roof collapsed on the site. as a result, one of the visitors was killed. The excavations were not affected, but free entrance to the excavation site was closed. Today, the artifacts found are in the Museum of Prehistoric Tyra, among them you can see many works of ancient art.
