Photo and description

The Danube Tower was opened in April 1964 and was designed by the architect Hanns Lintl in preparation for the International Garden Exhibition. Outwardly, the tower looks like a TV tower, but in practice it has nothing to do with television.

The Danube Tower is the tallest free-standing building in Austria, at 252 meters. The tower is located near the north bank of the Danube in Vienna's 22nd business district, Donaustadt. Since its opening, it has become part of the Viennese skyline and a popular tourist attraction, which is understandable, because the visibility from the tower in good weather is about 80 kilometers.

The observation deck is located at an altitude of 150 meters, where visitors are taken by two high-speed passenger elevators. The elevator itself is also a kind of attraction: it can accommodate up to 14 passengers and rises to such a height in just 35 seconds. In strong winds, elevators travel at a much lower speed due to possible tower vibrations. Of course, the tower also has a staircase with 779 steps. However, it is only used during the annual running festival or in emergencies.

The tower houses two revolving restaurants (at an altitude of 160 and 170 meters), which offer an excellent view of the Austrian capital and the Danube. Restaurants do a full revolution of the platform at 39 and 52 minutes, respectively. The restaurants are initially largely identical, however, it is now believed that the upper restaurant is more presentable, while the lower one is more of a cafe. However, the menu and prices are not much different.
