Photo and descriptionThe Church of St. John the Baptist is located in the northwestern part of Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria. The local population calls the temple the Church of St. Jani. John the Baptist, after whom the temple is named, is one of the most revered saints in Christianity. The church was built in the XVIII-XIX centuries. The building is a two-storey building made of stone with wooden elements - balconies, stairs, etc. The interior of the temple is decorated with frescoes: the columns are painted with garlands and bouquets, the space above the iconostasis and the episcopal throne is decorated with colorful images of birds - doves, peacocks, etc. It is of exceptional artistic value the iconostasis, as well as the royal doors. The icons for the temple were painted by artists Yakov Nikolay and Lazar Argirov. The Church of St. John is a historical monument of national importance and belongs to the group of cultural objects of the Melnik reserve (open-air museum). Currently, the temple is still operating as a cemetery city church.
