Photo and description

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Kazanlak was built in 1844 at the initiative and under the leadership of the wealthy and influential citizen Stoyan Gruyolu. The temple was erected on the site where until the end of the 18th century there was a Hilendar monastery with a parish school under him.

The temple is a basilica with three apses, a porch and a bell tower topped with a dome. Outside, the building is surrounded by a thick wall. There are three thrones in the church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, St. John of Rilski and St. Kharlampy. The icons for the church were painted by craftsmen from Tryavna, and the iconostasis was made by a craftsman from the city of Debar.

During the Russo-Turkish War, the building was used as a barn. After the Liberation, restoration work went on in the temple for a long time. In 1896 a new bell tower was built, and in 1936 the vaults of the church were almost completely re-painted. The works were carried out by the masters of icon painting Stefan Ivanov, Dechko Uzunov, Nikola Marinov, as well as the Kazanlak artist Mara Chorbadzhiyskaya.

The Church of St. John the Baptist is the largest temple in the city and one of the main attractions of Kazanlak.
