The monument to the heavenly patron of the city of Nikolaev - St. Nicholas the Wonderworker - was erected in Chestnut Square along Sovetskaya Street in 2005. The opening of the monument took place in honor of the 216th anniversary of the city. Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker has long been considered the patron saint of sailors, protects their ships during long voyages.

The monument to Nicholas the Wonderworker was made of gray-blue marble by architects A. Pavlov, A. Bondar and sculptor I. Bulavitsky. The monument was created for a year and a half with money donated by residents of the city. The names of all benefactors are immortalized on the pedestal. At the base of the pedestal was laid the land from the Italian city of Bari, which was brought to Nikolaev by the Italian Constantino Massa, who also took part in the opening ceremony of the monument. The consecration of the monument to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was carried out by Archbishop Nikolayevsky and Voznesensky Pitirim.

Nikolai the Wonderworker is one of the most revered Christian saints. Since olden times, St. Nicholas has been especially revered in Russia and Ukraine. The people call him the Protector of God and consider him the patron saint of children.

In 1788, on the day of St. Nicholas the Winter, the troops of Prince Grigory Potemkin captured the impregnable Turkish fortress - Ochakov. The Grand Duke, being a devout man, was sure that it could not do without the help of higher powers. To all this, the shipyard erected by his order at the mouth of the Ingul River was named the city of Nikolaev.
